Wind Today - Q3 2008 - (Page 103) Industry Profile Years with Company: 22 Years in the Industry: 22 Born: Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada, 1953. Family: Married to Lynn; daughter Laura, son Steven. the potential to offer North American energy security. This fact, and the increasing need to address air quality and climate change issues, ensures a solid future for our industry for a very long time! Key to the growth of the industry: Leadership is needed for society to address the dual risks posed by climate change and the need for clean energy. Politicians, policy makers and bureaucratic decision makers must embrace renewable energy development and act as a team with industry to simplify the permitting and approvals process. Only by ‘parting the waters’ and streamlining approvals will we see the extraordinary build out of energy infrastructure that will be needed in just the next few years. The biggest trend in the industry: Rising infrastructure costs threaten to stall momentum for low-impact energy projects across the continent. Higher energy prices, not unlike those experienced in Europe, will have to gain acceptance in North America. Our political leaders must not take their eye off the climate change ball to focus instead on economic issues—smart politicians realize both the environment and the economy can progress in tandem. What I predict for the industry in the next three years: Wind will continue to grow at a fast pace, mainly because politicians of all stripes now accept the demand by voters that something dramatic be done to clean up the atmosphere. Our quality of life depends on it. Hobbies: Collecting everything from coins to power companies, hiking, scuba diving, water sports, tennis. 103 John Keating Hydr dro Canadian Hydro Dev Developers, Inc. Chief Executive Officer Suite 500, 1324-17 Avenue S.W. Calgary, Alberta, Canada T2T 5S8 403-269-9379 jkeating@canhydro.com www.canhydro.com Education: Bachelor of Commerce, 1975, Chartered Accountant, 1977. Career: Public accounting with KPMG, specialized in taxation, 1975 to 1979; upstream oil and gas exploration and production, 1980 to 1992; building Canadian Hydro Developers as a renewable energy business across Canada, 1986 to present. My personal key to success: Patience and perseverance are keys to success in the renewable energy business. Honesty and some ability to strategize and tell the story with passion are also important. My biggest challenge: Navigating complex and, in many cases, duplicate approval processes in multiple jurisdictions has become one of the biggest issues wind developers face today. I meet that challenge by: Canadian Hydro is committed to being an operationally excellent company, and key to new project development is finetuning our ability to execute all phases of project evaluation and permitting as efficiently as humanly possible. It is no longer sufficient to simply be operationally excellent in designing, constructing and operating wind energy plants—successful developers today need to be expert communicators as well as good neighbors. What I like about the wind industry: Wind and other sources of renewable power, using existing technology, have “Building a solid, long-term, successful and sustainable business with my brother Ross Keating tops my list of professional highlights. To build something the whole family is proud of, and to do that with a sibling, is a very special and rare accomplishment. Our energy-hungry world will need an everincreasing amount of energy supplied via the solar cycle, be it from wind, water, biomass or the sun directly. Any business that can efficiently assist in satisfying this need is sure to succeed in this new century.” —John Keating http://www.canhydro.com http://www.canhydro.com
