Industry Focus Composotech Structures In 2004, Mike Jeffrey founded Composotech Stuctures Inc. to engineer, manufacture, and service largescale advanced structural composite products and tooling for the aerospace and wind industries. Prior to starting Composotech, Jeffrey had 15 years of experience in the wind turbine blade manufacturing industry. Composotech employs more than 60 technicians who service, maintain, and repair wind turbine blades for wind farms in the United States and Canada. Services include blade maintenance and repair, wind turbine performance enhancement, and inspection. Jeffrey says Composotech provides on-site support when new turbines are installed and during the O&M warranty period. He says those who perform preventive measures will benefit from realizing full life-time expectancy on turbine components and lower repair costs. “Many turbines are susceptible to Wind T urbine Blades vibrations caused by rotor imbalance, which can lead to accelerated wear of gear boxes, bearings, and rotor blades,” says Jeffrey. Ensuring proper aerodynamic alignment of the blades at erection, he says, can reduce the level of vibration and stress on the entire turbine. According to Jeffrey, Composotech technicians can establish vibration level bench marks that are in turn used as tolerances during annual maintenance to ensure that the turbine is operating under normal levels. Vibrations outside acceptable levels initiate actions to address and correct the cause.
