Glossary Wind Today’s glossary includes selected terms found in articles and reports related to the wind industry, with their definitions, as well as acronyms found in Wind Today articles with the words and titles they represent. AEP AGMA Annual Energy Performance American Gear Manufacturers Association Installed (or Nameplate) Capacity The rated power of a wind turbine. Independent of actual generation or capacity factor. Interconnection The system that connects a distributed generation resource to the grid. IRR ISO Internal Rate of Return Independent System Operator Kilovolt (kv) 1,000 volts Kilowatt (kW) 1,000 watts Kilowatt Hours (kWh) A unit of work or energy equal to one kilowatt in one hour. Life-Cycle Cost The estimated cost of owning and operating an energy system for the period of its useful life. LLC Load Limited Liability Corporation An end-use device or customer that receives power from the electric system. Load should not be confused with demand, which is the measure of power that a load receives or requires. Low-Voltage Ride Through Availability Used to describe reliability. It refers to the number of hours the resource is available to provide service divided by the total hours in the year. Average Wind Speed The mean wind speed during a specific period, often one year. One of the most common measures used to evaluate a wind resource. Base Load The minimum amount of electric power delivered or required over a given period of time at a steady rate, or the portion of the electricity demand that is continuous and does not vary over a 24-hour basis. Base Load Capacity The generating equipment normally operated to serve loads on a 24-hour basis. BOP Balance of Plant LVRT Megawatt (MW) Unit of power equal to 1 million watts or 1,000 kilowatts. Enough electricity for 10,000 100 watt light bulbs. Merchant or “Market” Power Wind power plants that are built without a traditional long-term power purchase agreement may sell the power into a spot-market. North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) An independent agency that regulates the interstate transmission of natural gas, oil, and electricity. OCC Operations Control Center Capacity Factor A measure of the productivity of a wind turbine, calculated by the amount of power that a wind turbine produces over a set period of time, divided by the amount of power that would have been produced if the turbine had been running at full capacity during that same time interval. CEERT COE Center for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Technologies Cost of Energy PAYGO Pay-As-You-Go Peak Load, Peak Demand The maximum load, or usage, of electrical power occurring in a given period of time, typically a day. PPA PTC Power Purchase Agreement Production Tax Credit. A federal commercial tax credit for wind energy development that reduces income tax liability based on the amount of renewable energy generation. Demand The rate at which energy is used by the customer, or the rate at which energy is flowing through a particular system element, usually expressed in kilowatts or megawatts. Economies of Scale Reduction in cost derived from increases in size. EMS FERC Energy Management System Federal Energy Regulatory Commission Force Majeure Means “superior power” and involves events beyond a party’s control that create frrustration of purpose, or the impossibiilty or impracticability of performance. Frame (or Framework) Agreement A long-term supply agreement in which the purchaser commits to buy a locked-in supply of turbines for which more specific details can be set at a later date. Gearbox Transmission Mechanism that transfers the mechanical power of a wind turbine rotor to that of the load. Generating Capacity Rated or peak power of a wind turbine or the sum of the rated or peak power of all wind turbines in an array in watts. Gigawatt (GW) A unit of power equal to 1 billion watts; 1 million kilowatts, or 1,000 megawatts. Hectare A metric unit of area equal to 100 ares, or 10,000 square meters. Equivalent to 2.471 acres. Retrofit General term for any changes to system. Anything that needs improvement relating to failures, safety. Work to resolve issue. RFP RPS RTO Request for Proposal Renewable Portfolio Standard Regional Transmission Organization SCADA Supervisory Control & Data Acquisition Systems TSA Turbine Supply Agreement Upgrade Improve something that is working. Make better. Vertical Integration The integration within one company of individual businesses working separately in related phases of the production and sale of a product absorption into a single firm of several firms involved in all aspects of a product’s manufacture from raw materials to distribution.
