Wind Today - Q3 2008 - (Page 82) News Government News— States World Leader The United States is a World Leader Wind According U.S. in Wind Energy According to a U.S. Department of Energy Report According to a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) report released in May, the United States continues to lead the world in wind power installation. The report—U.S. Wind Power Installation, Cost, and Performance Trends—found that in 2007, U.S. wind power capacity increased by 46% reflecting $9 billion of investment. This is the third straight year the United States has held claim to the fastest-growing wind power market in the world. Additionally, the report shows that wind power projects accounted for 35% of all new U.S. electric generating capacity in 2007, and transmission facilities capable of generating more than 200 GW of wind power are in the early stages of development throughout the nation. U.S. Department of Energy Promotes Regional r Promotes Regional T ansmission Planning With $2.3 Million Grant With $2.3 Grant The Department of Energy (DOE) plans to contribute $2.3 million over the next three years to identify areas in the western United States with considerable renewable energy resources, and expedite the development and delivery of those resources to meet regional energy needs. Under the Western Renewable Energy Zones (WREZ) project, regional transmission planning will be promoted along with the development of renewable energy sources. The project was launched by the Western Governors’ Association in cooperation with DOE to further the department’s efforts to address generation and transmission challenges through a regional approach. CanWEA Submits an Extension and Proposal Expansion Proposal to the House of for EcoENERGY’s Rene enew Commons for EcoENERGY’s Renewable Progr ogram Power Program Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) in mid-August discontinued funding for its ecoENERGY Renewable Power Program effective Dec. 31, 2009. The program, which launched in 2007 to support the deployment of 4,000 MW of new renewable energy by March 31, 2011, has been considered successful according to the Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA). However, the NRC in making its ruling said the program had met its objectives and has no plans to continue the program past Dec. 31, 2009. In response, CanWEA has submitted a proposal to the House of Commons Standing Committee on Finance in hopes of expanding and extending the program in the 2009 federal budget. CanWEA says its proposal would support the operation of an additional 8,000 MW of renewable energy by March 31, 2014. According to CanWEA, the end of the program would slow the growth of the Canadian wind industry.
