Wind Today - Q3 2008 - (Page 86) News International News— Argentina—Barrick Gold Corporation, Toronto, ON, started operation Aug. 14 of the world’s highestaltitude wind turbine at the Veladero mine in Argentina. The turbine, located in the province of San Juan, stands about 4,200 meters (13,780 feet) above sea level. The turbine, which was installed in 2007, is customized to adapt to the area’s climate of severe, cold winds. the organization’s new managing director Sept. 1. Hylleberg comes to DWIA from The Danish Association of the Pharmaceutical Industry where he was employed as the assistant general manager. More than 400 wind-related companies are located in Denmark. A recent report in the New York Times suggests Denmark’s wind industry might be slowing down. Turbine construction has slowed since government subsidies were cut in 2005, while some of the country’s offshore turbines have been damaged by storms and salt water. The cost to repair these turbines is estimated to be more than $10 million, which might dissuade some companies looking to build offshore wind projects. Furthermore, increased demand for wind turbines is causing their price to go up. According to the Wall Street Journal, the cost of turbines has increased 74% in the last three years. The Denmark Parliament in late August approved construction of the country’s largest offshore wind farm in the Kattegat Strait in the North Sea. Up to 175 wind turbines capable of producing 400 MW of energy will be placed by 2012 in the Jutland waters. This will be enough energy to power 400,000 homes per year. Denmark hopes to reach The European Commission’s goal of generating 30% of its energy from wind by 2020. European Union—The European Union (EU) is studying plans for a high-voltage, transnational power grid in the North Sea that would provide electricity to 70 million homes. The proposed 3,850 mile offshore grid would connect more than 100 wind farms—a total of 10,000 wind turbines— in Britain, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Norway. Scotland—ScottishPower Renewables reported in early September that the first two golden eagle chicks—named Ben and Turk—were born in more than a decade at its conservation area on the Beinnan Tuirc Wind Farm in Argyll, Scotland. The 46-turbine wind farm is considered to have the largest conservation project for golden eagles in the United Kingdom. The wind farm is 1,215 hectares, with 450 hectares reserved for traditional plants, such as heather, blaeberry, and cotton grass. Belgium—REpower Systems AG, Germany, in late July installed the first of six 5 MW wind turbines for Thornton Bank, Belgium’s first offshore wind farm located about 30 km off the coast. The 30-MW wind energy project is being erected in water 25 meters deep using jackup drilling platforms, and will be placed on gravity-based foundations. The project will be completed in three phases. China—The Chinese Ministry of Finance will subsidize wind turbine manufacturers as the country pursues a goal of generating 15% of its energy needs from renewable sources. The government has set an official target of 30 GW of installed wind capacity by 2020. Chinese turbine manufacturers will receive CNY$600 ($88) per kilowatt from the Ministry of Finance for the first 50 turbines (1.5 MW or larger) they produce. Denmark—The Danish Wind Industry Association (DWIA), Copenhagen, has named Jan Hylleberg 86 United Kingdom—Renewable Energy Generation, Ltd., Surrey, ENG, UK, has been granted permission to upgrade the Goonhilly Downs Wind Farm on the Lizard Peninsula. Goonhilly Downs, one of Britain’s oldest wind farms, will be repowered to produce nearly three times its current energy output. The 14-turbine wind farm, built in 1992, will go from producing 5.6 MW of electricity to about 15 MW, providing more than 7,000 homes with energy.
