Wind Today - Q4 2008 - (Page 18) Utilities With the Most Wind Power on Their System The American Wind Energy Association, Washington, DC (AWEA/ 202-383-2500) released its 2008 Annual Rankings Report in April. The report includes listings of the amount of wind power carried on utilities’ systems, as well as how the utilities acquire wind power—whether by owning the wind farm that generates the power, by purchasing electricity through power purchase agreements (PPA), or through a combination Stats Investor-Owned Utilities pg 20 Public (Municipal) Utilities pg 22 Cooperative Utilities pg 24 of the two. For the first time, this year’s report provided rankings of ownership as of the end of 2007 that distinguish between Investor-Owned Utilities, Public Power (Municipal) Utilities, and Rural Electric Cooperatives (Co-ops). Some utilities reserve some of the wind power they own for a subscriber base for their green power programs. Green power programs offer utility customers the choice of supporting energy created by renewable resources. Investor-Owned Utilities, see page 20, are owned by shareholders and managed as private enterprises. Public power utilities, also called municipal utilities, are publicly owned, nonprofit government agencies. See page 22 for their rankings. Cooperative utilities (co-ops) are owned by their members and are operated to meet members’ needs.
