Wind Today - Q4 2008 - (Page 22) Stats Public Power (Municipal) Utilities with Wind Power on Their Systems According to the AWEA 2008 Rankings Report, Texas municipal utilities CPS Energy, San Antonio, and Austin Energy, Austin, top the list of public power utilities with wind power on their systems. Public, or municipal, utilities, are publicly-owned, non-profit government agencies. Public utility rates and standards of service are established by legislation and administered by state regulatory commissions and federal agencies such as the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). In April, the American Wind Energy Association, Washington, DC, released its 2008 report which ranks public power utilities by how much wind power they owned or purchased for their customers in 2007. op T T en The chart above lists the 10 public power utilities with the most wind power on their systems. The top four public power utilities purchase the majority of their wind energy through Power Purchase Agreements (PPA). The rest produce wind power at their own wind farms. • CPS Energy, San Antonio, TX, tops the list with 501 megawatts (MW). • Austin Energy, TX, has 274 MW. • MSR Public Power Agency, Modesto, CA, secures 200 MW of wind power. • Seattle City Light, Seattle, WA, purchases 175 MW. The Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD), Sacramento, CA, is the only one of the top five public power utilities that owns wind farms where the wind-generated electricity they sell for customers’ use is produced. • The Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD), Norfolk, NE, in sixth place, purchases 1.5 MW and generates 59.4 T op T en Public Power Utilities with Wind Power on Their Systems PPA For Customers Owned & Used for Customers Atlantic County Utilities Authority Municipal Energy Agency of Nebraska Southern Minnesota Municipal Power Authority Oklahoma Municipa Power Authority Nebraska Public Power District Sacramento Municipal Utility District Seattle City Light MSR Public Power Agency (Calif.)
