Wind Today - Q4 2008 - (Page 34) News AWEA Releases Third Quarter Market Report The American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) released its third quarter market report on October 22. According to the report, the U.S. wind energy industry installed 1,389 megawatts (MW) from July through September. That brings the total capacity of wind projects completed through 2008 to 4,204 MW. Cumulative installed wind capacity in the United States now exceeds 21,000 MW. The industry is expected to reach an annual total of approximately 7,500 MW by the end of this year—the fourth consecutive year in which the United States has surpassed the previous year’s total. In 2007, newly installed wind energy capacity totaled 5,249 MW. Highlights of the report include: • Texas added 693 MW, bringing the state’s total installed wind capacity to more than 6,000 MW, No. 1 in the country. • West Virginia more than tripled its existing capacity with the addition of the 164 MW Shell Mount Storm Wind Farm in Grant County. • Utah added its first multi-turbine project, the 9-turbine Spanish Fork Wind Farm in Utah County. • North Dakota and South Dakota share the first U.S. wind farm developed and owned by Acciona Energy, Navarra, Spain. The Tatanka Wind Farm features 120 Acciona wind turbines sited in Dickey and McIntosh counties, ND, and in McPherson County, SD. Manufacturing increases. With the added demand for wind turbine components, AWEA reports that wind industry manufacturers have opened eight new manufacturing facilities this year with the expansion of another nine plants. Nineteen new manufacturing plants have been anounced. The new plants are expected to create 9,000 jobs. 34 Response No. 341 WIND TODA Y Fourth Quarter 2008 http://www.polytechservicescorp.com http://www.polytechservicescorp.com
