Wind Today - Q4 2008 - (Page 69) News Corporate News — 3TIER, Seattle, WA, was recognized in October by the Puget Sound Business Journal as one of Washington state’s “100 Fastest-Growing Private Companies” for 2008. The company ranked 24th based on its three-year revenue growth of 200%. Acciona Energy, with U.S. headquarters in Chicago, IL, broke ground in September on the new $250 million Red Hills Wind Farm in Elk City, OK. The 123 MW wind farm will feature Acciona’s 1.5 MW turbines, some of which will be made at the company’s West Branch, IA facility. Acciona has also started manufacturing its new 3 MW wind turbine—AW3000—at the West Branch plant. In other Acciona news, the company unveiled its Tatanka Wind Farm Scholarship Fund during the Sept. 24 dedication ceremony for its new 180 MW wind farm in McPherson County, SD and Dickey and McIntosh Counties, ND. The company will award three locally qualifying graduating seniors each with a $5,000 scholarship. American Superconductor Corp. (AMSC), Devens, MA, licensed two of its proprietary wind turbine designs to South Korea-based Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. (HHI). Under the terms of the contracts, announced Oct. 15, AMSC’s whollyowned AMSC Windtec subsidiary will license designs to HHI for its 1.65 MW and 2 MW doubly-fed induction wind turbines. HHI will begin production of the 1.65 MW turbines by the end of 2009 and will target the U.S. market. A-Power Energy Generation Systems, Ltd., Shenyang, China, in midSeptember announced that it had acquired technology from Germanbased Fuhrlander AG to upgrade its wind turbines from 2.5 MW to 2.7 MW. The new license agreement, which upgrades the company’s initial 2007 agreement, will allow A-Power to produce wind turbines with an output of 2.7 MW, the largest land-based turbine in production.
