Wind Today - Q4 2008 - (Page 78) Industry Focus HPM America HPM America was founded in 1877 as Hydraulic Press Manufacturing America in Mount Gilead, OH. The company, which manufactured the first American-made injection molding machine in 1931, has gone by HPM since the 1970s and recently added “America” to distinguish itself from its international divisions. HPM’s assets were purchased by Taylor’s Industrial Services, LLC in 2001 and the company now operates five businesses—HPM America, Taylor’s Support Services, Taylor’s Engineering Services, Taylor’s Heavy Haul, and HPM Manufacturing. Gerard Sposato, vice president of sales and marketing, says HPM is Taylor’s OEM business, which supplies capital equipment to the plastics, die casting, and metal forming industries. Industry Wind Industry In 2006, Sposato says HPM found itself victim to the declining automotive market that it greatly depended on for many of its OEM equipment sales. “The management of the company decided to seize the opportunity outside of its standard product lines and diversify the company by going Contract Manufacturing ‘green,’” Sposato says. That same year, HPM formed its Contract Manufacturing Unit, which utilizes the company’s capabilities for machining large parts used in turbines. For the wind industry, HPM provides engineering services to wind turbine manufacturers, contract machining services, fabrication, and assembly in North America. “The current focus for us is securing wind contracts to produce components used in wind turbines in order to assemble hubs,” says Sposato. “As this focus continues, we will look at the possibility of manufacturing a complete wind turbine system within the next decade,” he adds. Sposato says HPM’s 400,000-squarefoot facility in central Ohio has easy access to all major highways and the CSX rail system. The company has four assembly bays, which have 150-ton lifting capacity with a 72-foot under hook, making them ideal for assembly and sub-assembly work. 820 Marion Road Mount Gilead, OH 43338 419-946-0222 FAX: 419-946-2473 www.hpmamerica.com sales@hpmamerica.com HPM America Services Facility Features • Wide assembly bays with high ceiling • Capacity for medium-sized prismatic parts for shaft and turning work • Full-service weld and forming shop can handle fabrications up to 100 tons • Private rail spur that comes into the main assembly bay Equipment • New CNC machine tools • Large tonnage cranes • Burn tables can flame cut steel plates up to 10.5 inches thick • Horizontal machining capabilities to support a part envelope of 192” x 360” with lifting capacity of 150 tons • Whirling and grinding capabilities 78 http://www.hpmamerica.com http://www.hpmamerica.com
