Wind Today - Q1 2008 - (Page 12) News Global Wind Energy Continues to Grow World-Wide Wind Power Capacity Has Reached 94, 12 MW 1 The Global Wind Energy Council, Brussels, Belgium (GWEC/+32 2 400 1029), reports more than 20,000 megawatts (MW) of new wind power installations in 2007, bringing worldwide installed capacity to 94,112 MW. “The growth rates we are experiencing in wind energy continue to exceed our most optimistic expectations,” says GWEC Secretary General Steve Sawyer. “Globally, wind energy has become a mainstream energy source and an important player in the world’s energy markets, and it now contributes to the energy mix in more than 70 countries across the globe.” The United States, China, and Spain lead the world with a total of 12,208 MW in new installations reported during 2007. The 5,244 MW installed in the United States in 2007 more than doubles the 2,454 MW installed in 2006, and represents a 45% increase in national wind power generating capacity. The United States reported in January a cumulative total of more than 16,800 MW. China installed 3,449 MW of wind energy capacity during 2007. This represents market growth of more than 156% over 2006. China reports total installed wind energy capacity of more than 6,000 MW, nudging Denmark out of its ranking of fifth place for global wind energy capacity. Spain reports 3,515 MW of new capacity installed in 2007, bringing the country’s cumulative total to more than 15,000 MW. Europe added 8,662 MW of new wind energy capacity in 2007, bringing the continent’s total wind power capacity installed to 57,135 MW. The Middle East/North Africa region represents an up-and-coming member of the wind energy market with a cumulative total of 534 MW at the end of 2007. This represents an increase in wind power installations of 42% with new capacity added in Egypt, Morocco, Iran, and Tunisia. The top five countries in terms of installed capacity in 2007 are Germany (22.3 gigawatts/GW), the United States (16.8 GW), Spain (15.1 GW), India (8 GW), and China (6.1 GW).
