Wind Today - Q1 2008 - (Page 58) Industry Focus Second Wind, Inc. In 1980, Walter Sass and Kenneth Cohn, friends since grade school, founded Second Wind, Inc. in Somerville, MA. As electrical and materials science engineers who were interested in benefiting the environment, Sass and Cohn had determined the commercial wind industry needed a means to collect accurate and timely information about prospective wind sites and turbine performance. According to General Manager Susan Giordano, the pair established the company’s first headquarters in the spare bedroom of Sass’s home. Giordano says Second Wind introduced the first data logger specifically for wind energy prospecting in 1981 and has maintained a presence in wind resource assessment ever since. In 1985, Second Wind introduced the Second Wind System, the company’s first wind farm monitoring system. In 2007, Second Wind launched its newest wind measurement tool—the Triton™ sonic wind profiler. “Since we manufacture our own products, including the Nomad® 2 data logger, C3 anemometer, and the Triton sonic wind profiler,” says Giordano, “we can design our products with production in mind, ensuring that laboratory innovations can translate directly into customer benefits at wind sites.” Wind Equipment Giordano says Second Wind products have been placed in more than 40 countries and on all seven continents, including Antarctica. T riton Sonic Wind Profiler According to Giordano, the Triton sonic wind profiler re-invents sodar technology for wind assessment. It captures accurate wind data up to 200 meters, in any weather, at any location, without being attended. She explains that readings look like anemometry results, with no expert analysis required. “Based on enthusiastic customer response and initial beta test results,” says Giordano, “we are confident the Triton will become a popular choice for profiling.” Giordano explains that the Triton functions like a 200-meter met mast with the added benefit of being completely portable. “Developers who use Triton can prospect a wider range of sites thanks to its compact form compared to a meteorological tower, and that it can be placed in locations where a temporary tilt-up tower can’t go,” says Giordano.
