Industry Focus Henkels & McCoy Henkels & McCoy was founded in 1923 as a tree-trimming, landscaping, tennis court-building company. Today, according to Rick Pieper, market manager-power, the Blue Bell, PA-based company is one of the largest privately-held engineering, utility infrastructure, and construction firms in the United States. Henkels & McCoy, owned by the Henkels family since its inception, now has more than 80 permanent offices and operation facilities located across the United States. The company serves utility, commercial, and governmental clients. Pieper says the company consistently ranks at the top of the Engineering News-Record list of Specialty Contractors. “Our capabilities include design, construction, installation, material and project management, maintenance, and training,” he says. Wind Industry Pieper says Henkels & McCoy was already building substations and transmission lines for utilities when wind developers in the western United States approached them to do similar work. Electrical Services The company soon saw an opportunity to use under-utilized long-haul fiber resources to construct collector systems. Henkels & McCoy started installing collector systems in the Midwest, then added tower wiring, followed by substation and transmission line work. “We have now expanded into Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) of the entire electrical system by utilizing both internal engineering resources and outside engineering partners,” says Pieper. “Since we currently work for most Investor Owned Utilities (IOUs), those relationships can also help facilitate the interconnect work for wind developers,” Pieper explains. As the current transmission system capacity is used up, Pieper believes that in order for wind projects to connect into the grid, they will require longer and higher voltage transmission lines.
