Wind Today - Q1 2008 - (Page 6) Events WINDPOWER 2008 George R. Brown Convention Center June 1 | Houston, TX -4 The American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) will host its WINDPOWER 2008 Conference and Exhibition, June 1 to 4, at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston, TX. Conference organizers expect this year’s conference and exhibition to draw more than 8,000 attendees and 550 exhibitors from all over the world. The theme, Wind: Thriving at the Epicenter of Energy, reflects both the location of the conference—Houston has been called the energy capital of the world—and the status of the wind industry as the fastest growing energy source in the country. Wind power generating capacity in the United States was expanded by 45% in 2007, accounting for about 30% of the entire new power-producing capacity added nationally last year. Conference Program More than 300 speakers, 150 poster presentations, and 50 sessions relating to leading wind energy topics will be organized into tracks with policy, business, technical, and scientific focuses. Sessions begin Monday, June 2 and run through Wednesday, June 4. “A highlight of WINDPOWER 2008 will be the release of the 20% Road Map that many of our members have contributed to in our endeavor for wind energy to meet 20% of the U.S. demand for electricity,” says Lori Rugh, AWEA’s strategic development and sales manager. “We will have numerous sessions and conversations relating to that issue,” she says. Attendees can also participate in several day-long pre-conference seminars for more in-depth education on selected topics. Pre-conference seminars are scheduled on Sunday. Exhibits The Exhibit Hall will open with a reception from 6:00 - 7:30 p.m. Sunday, June 1, followed by a concert at Discovery Green from 8:00 - 10:00 p.m. The Exhibit Hall will be open 9:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, and will close at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday. Lodging AWEA has negotiated discounted hotel rates at more than a dozen area hotels for attendees and exhibitors. The association encourages those attending WINDPOWER 2008 to arrange lodging in one of these official conference hotels through the official housing bureau of the conference and exhibition.
