Wind Today - Q1 2008 - (Page 60) Industry Focus NRG Systems In 1982, Jan and David Blittersdorf started NRG Systems from their home in Bristol, VT. At that time, David engineered and marketed equipment to measure the wind. Twenty-five years later, the company has grown to employ 85 people in its gold LEED-certified manufacturing facility in Hinesburg, VT. According to Barton Merle-Smith, director of sales and marketing, NRG products are now operating in more than 120 countries and on every continent. Jan, who officially joined the company in 1987, has served as president and CEO since 2004. Her husband, David, has since launched a new venture to manufacture home wind systems. The Wind Industry A long-time champion of the wind industry (he grew up near the site of the world’s first commercial wind turbine on Grandpa’s Knob in Vermont), David recognized the need for more precise equipment to measure the wind, and decided to engineer it himself. As the industry took off, Jan prepared the company for rapid growth by developing the people and systems it needed to succeed. After many years of research and development, the company now makes complete systems, sensors, towers, and Wind Measurement Equipment instruments to help others find and measure the wind in order to determine the best location and economic viability of wind projects. “NRG Systems is the only company in the wind industry that manufactures complete measurement systems, and we’re one of very few that serves the industry exclusively,” says Merle-Smith. “Our products are engineered to provide the accuracy and reliability that our customers need for project financing, power contract negotiations, and assessing turbine performance,” he continues. “Wind assessment and data collection is the essential first step before any wind project moves forward.” Merle-Smith says NRG Systems has grown at more than 30% annually and maintains a leadership position in wind measurement technology. The company maintains a set of values in business that include fair employment, profitability, integrity, innovation, dedication, and environmental stewardship. “Our plan for the future is to continue developing our people, technology, and products in order to meet our customers’ growing demand while remaining true to our mission,” Merle-Smith concludes.
