Wind Today - Q1 2008 - (Page 62) Wind Resource Maps Wind Powering America provides validated wind maps that document wind resources available in many states, including Michigan. The state of New York was originally mapped in 1998, then updated and re-vali- dated in 2003 by AWS Truewind. Validation done by National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) staff and consulting meteorologists, includes comparison of wind resource modeling results Michigan The American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) reported Sept. 30, 2007 that Michigan ranks 14th nationally in wind energy resource. However, with just 2.59 megawatts (MW) of wind energy capacity installed, the state ranks 30th nationally in utility-scale wind energy installations. Michigan’s first commercial scale wind farm, the Harvest Wind Farm located at Oliver and Chandler Townships and scheduled for a spring project commemoration, has a power capacity of 52.8 MW. Developer and owner John Deere Wind Energy will sell the electricity generated to Wolverine Power Cooperative. Existing wind turbines in Michigan operate at the Laker Elementary School in Pigeon (0.2 MW), Mackinaw City (1.8 MW), and Traverse City (0.6 MW). According to AWEA, Michigan has wind energy potential of 65 billion kWh. (Potential is stated in terms of average megawatts of capacity (MWa) where one MWa is approximately equal to three MW of nameplate wind turbine capacity.) The map (to the right), published by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), shows average annual wind class estimates at 50 meters (m) above the ground and depicts the resource that could be used for utility-scale wind development. The map depicts the onshore utility-scale wind resources in the state to be concentrated along the • Ranked No. 14 in Wind Resource Potential • Ranked No. 30 in Utility-Scale Wind Energy Installations immediate shores of the Great Lakes (especially Lakes Michigan and Superior), and on offshore islands. The Great Lakes themselves have good-to-outstanding wind resource. There is also a large area of Class 3 resource located northeast of Saginaw on the “thumb” of the state.
