Wind Today - Q1 2008 - (Page 65) Glossary Wind Today’s glossary includes selected terms found in articles and reports related to the wind industry, with their definitions, as well as acronyms found in Wind Today articles with the words and titles they represent. AEP AGMA Annual Energy Performance American Gear Manufacturers Association ISO Load Independent System Operator An end-use device or customer that receives power from the electric system. Load should not be confused with demand, which is the measure of power that a load receives or requires. Megawatt (MW) Unit of power equal to 1 million watts or 1,000 kilowatts. Enough electricity for 10,000 100 watt light bulbs. Merchant or “Market” Power Wind power plants that are built without a traditional long-term power purchase agreement may sell the power into a spot-market. m/s NOAA meters per second—measurement of wind speed National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Weather Service Arc Flash A short circuit that flashes from one exposed line conductor to another, or to ground. The resulting ionized air creates electrically conductive superheated plasma that can reach temperatures of over 5,000 degrees farenheit. Availability Used to describe reliability. It refers to the number of hours the resource is available to provide service divided by the total hours in the year. Base Load The minimum amount of electric power delivered or required over a given period of time at a steady rate, or the portion of the electricity demand that is continuous and does not vary over a 24-hour period. Base Load Capacity The generating equipment normally operated to serve loads on a 24-hour basis. BOP Balance of Plant Peak Load, Peak Demand The maximum load, or usage, of electrical power occurring in a given period of time, typically a day. PPA PUC QF Power Purchase Agreement Public Utility Commission Qualified Facility. A cogeneration or small power production facility that meets certain ownership, operating, and efficiency criteria established by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) pursuant to the Public Utility Regulatory Policies Act (PURPA). Renewable Energy Credit: Credits that correspond to the amount of power produced using renewable energy. Demand The rate at which energy is used by the customer, or the rate at which energy is flowing through a particular system element, usually expressed in kilowatts or megawatts. EHV EPC Extra High Voltage Engineering, Procurement, and Construction REC Retrofit General term for any changes to system. Anything that needs improvement relating to failures, safety. Work to resolve issue. RFP RPS Request for Proposal Renewable Portfolio Standard ERCOT Electric Reliability Council of Texas FERC Federal Energy Regulatory Commission Generating Capacity Rated or peak power of a wind turbine or the sum of the rated or peak power of all wind turbines in an array in watts. GSU I&I Generator Step Up Injury and illness RPS Targets A designated percentage of renewable energy resources included in each retail electricity seller’s resource portfolio, with incremental milestones. RTO Regional Transmission Organization SCADA Supervisory Control & Data Acquisition systems Telco TSA Local telephone service provider Turbine Supply Agreement Installed (or Nameplate) Capacity The rated power of a wind turbine. Independent of actual generation or capacity factor. Interconnection The system that connects a distributed generation resource to the grid. IOU Investor Owned Utility. A class of utility whose stock is publicly traded and which is organized as a tax-paying business, usually financed by the sale of securities in the capital market. It is regulated and authorized to achieve an allowed rate of return. Internal Rate of Return Upgrade Improve something that is working.
