Stats Iberdrola Renewables Leads in Global Wind Power Ownership Iberdrola, Madrid, Spain, has secured the top position in wind power plant ownership worldwide for 2007. According to Emerging Energy Research, (EER), Cambridge, MA, Iberdrola owned more than 6.9 gigawatts (GW) under net wind power plant ownership at the end of 2007. During 2007, Iberdrola added more than 1.55 GW of new wind generation primarily in Spain and the United States; and added 1.45 GW through the acquisition of ScottishPower’s operating wind assets in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Ireland. As of March 2008, Iberdrola reported more than 7,700 megawatts (MW/7.7 GW) installed around the world, with another 1,370 MW (1.3 GW) under construction. Source: Emerging Energy Research Mov Place FPL Energy Moves to Second Place Globally FPL Energy, Juno Beach, FL, was the 2006 leader, and fell to second place with more than 5 GW of cumulative wind ownership at the end of 2007. EER reports that in 2007, FPL Energy built more new North American wind power installations than any other wind power owner for the third year in a row, with 956 MW added. The company also consolidated its equity position in another 108 MW of operating wind capacity in California. Acciona Energy, Navarra, Spain, and EDP, Lisbon, Portugal, nearly tied for third place with approximately 2.8 GW each. This does not take into account Acciona’s stake in the Spanish utility, Endesa. Babcock and Brown, Sydney, Australia, with 2.4 GW rounds out the top five global wind power owners for 2007. According to EER’s report, mergers and acquisitions (M&A) accounted for approximately one-third of total wind ownership growth among Europe’s top 20 wind owners. “With viable wind M&A targets dwindling, remaining at the head of the global wind rankings requires adding at least 500 MW of new wind build per year,” says EER Research Director Joshua Magee.
