Stats T 15 States with Wind Energy Installed op T exas Continues to Dominate New Wind Energy Installation Reports The American Wind Energy Association released their AWEA 2008 Annual Rankings Report in April. The report is based on information as of December 31, 2007, and includes rankings of wind power capacity for states with “utilitysized” wind turbines installed. According to the report, AWEA considers “utilty-sized” to include all wind turbines with generators 100kilowatt (kW) in size or larger. Six states exceeded 1,000 megawatts (MW) with their cumulative totals of installed wind energy capacity. Mirroring last year’s standings, Texas and California retain their number one and two positions in cumulative installed capacity. However, Texas added 1,708 MW of installed wind energy for a total of 4,446 MW, while California added just 63 MW bringing their cumulative total to 2,439 MW. Minnesota and Iowa swapped positions. Minnesota moved up to third by adding 405 MW for a cumulative total of 1,299 MW; and Iowa fell to fourth position with 341 MW added for a total of 1,271 MW. Washington retained its fifth-place spot with 345 MW added (1,163 MW total), and Colorado displaced Oklahoma for sixth place with 291 MW added for a total of 1,067 MW. Oregon (885 MW), Illinois (699 MW), Oklahoma (689 MW), and New Mexico (496 MW) round out the top 10 states. New Mexico’s entry into the top 10 reflects the state’s growth from no wind farm operations in 2006 to the construction of 496 MW of new wind generation in 2007.
