Stats Owners with the Most Wind Power Assets in the United States FPL Energy once again tops the list of U.S. wind power owners, according to the American Wind Energy Association’s 2008 Annual Rankings Report. With 5,077 megawatts (MW) of wind power ownership at the end of 2007, up from 4,016 MW at the end of 2006, FPL Energy, Juno Beach, FL, maintains a clear lead as the largest managing owner of wind power assets in the United States. FPL Energy is one of 15 companies with more than 200 MW of U.S. wind energy projects. The information, based on December, 2007 figures, was reported to AWEA by developers, owners, and operators. According to AWEA, the term “managing owner” is meant to convey the company that has managing interest in the project, not necessarily 100% equity ownership. The list does not include “structured equity” investors. Iberdrola, Madrid, Spain, with 1,645 MW, holds second place. In 2007, Iberdrola acquired ScottishPower (owner of developer PPM Energy, which had 1,058 MW of wind energy installations in 2006) and developer Community Energy. Energias de Portugal (EDP) purchased Source: AWEA Horizon Wind Energy from investment banker Goldman Sachs in July, 2007, bringing that company’s U.S. wind power assets to 1,142 MW. In 2006, Horizon reported ownership of 452 MW. Babcock & Brown nearly doubled its U.S. wind power assets from its 2006 ownership of 559 MW to a total of 1,120 MW in 2007, retaining its fourth-place position. Iowa-based utility MidAmerican Energy, with 933 MW dropped from third-place in 2006 (593 MW) to fifth place for 2007.
