Cow Branch Wind Farm Cow Branch Wind Farm During construction of the Bluegrass Ridge Wind Farm, Wind Capital Group announced plans in July 2006 for the nearby Cow Branch Wind Farm. This wind farm is located on more than 7,000 acres leased from 35 landowners in Atchison County, MO between the towns of Rock Port and Tarkio. Construction of the Cow Branch Wind Farm began in early 2007. Comprised of 24 Suzlon 2.1 MW wind turbines, total expected output comes to 50.4 MW. Cow Branch Wind Farm began producing wind energy in early 2008. This wind farm’s reported cost is $75 million. Wind Farm Conception Wind Farm The third wind farm Wind Capital Group developed is the Conception Wind Farm located near the town of Conception in southwest Nodaway County. The developer announced plans for this wind farm on October 20, 2006. Like the Cow Branch Wind Farm, this wind farm features 24 Suzlon 2.1 MW turbines. The Conception Wind Farm stands on more than 7,000 acres leased from 20 landowners. One of those landowners, the Order of Benedictine Sisters of Perpetual Adoration located in neighboring Clyde, MO, benefited from their expressed interest in the wind farm development. “We hosted community events in the fall of 2006,” says Hensley. “The Benedictine sisters were right there on the front row in support of the development.” Hensley says because of the sisters’ support and interest, plans for the wind farm were adjusted in order to site a turbine on their property. Another local religious order, Conception Abbey, leases land for one turbine and a substation. Jarrod Thome, Conception Abbey’s director of communications, says the monastery includes a 4-year accredited college, a printery house, and guest apartments. The land lease income supplements the Abbey’s apostolic works. “My first impression of the wind turbines was how big they are,” says Thome. He says he expected some detraction from the local scenery, but instead, everyone seems to feel that the wind turbines enhance the scenery. “I think the wind turbines augment the peaceful atmosphere here,” Thome Response No. 271 27 http://www.filterelement.com http://www.filterelement.com
