In fact, Saunders reports that one day in April 2008 when just three turbines were operating, the town used 27,600 kilowatt hours (kWh) of power, but purchased only 1,000 kWh from the MJMEUC. “These wind turbines are really doing the job,” says Saunders. “Now we have three options for providing power to the community,” says Saunders. “We can buy power from the MJMEUC, we can generate power using our diesel and natural gas turbines, or we can use the power generated by the wind turbines.” Saunders explains that the Loess used by local homes and businesses in Rock Port moves out onto the AECI’s transmission lines and is purchased by the Missouri Joint Municipal Utility System for use in other areas. “The way the system works, with power available whether we have wind or not, Rock Port still pays the Missouri Joint Municipal Utility System for the wind power we use, but we don’t pay any line charge for it,” says Saunders. According to Chamberlain, three landowners lease the property where the Loess Hills wind turbines stand. John Deere Wind Energy, Johnston, IA (800-362-8580), Wind Capital Group’s financial partner in the four northwest Missouri projects, took care of upgrading necessary transmission lines for the Loess Hills project.
