Wind Today - Q2 2008 - (Page 37) Question: How many GE 1.5 megawatt (MW) wind turbines does it take to replace 90 KENETECH 56-100 kilowatt (kW) wind turbines? Answer: Six. That’s what happened when enXco, Escondido, CA (760-329-1437), decided to repower part of its enXco V Wind Farm in 2006. History History The enXco V Wind Farm, located on approximately 2,300 acres at Birds Landing in Solano County, CA, was developed and constructed in 1989 by U.S. Windpower as a 60 megawatt (MW) wind farm. The original facility consisted of 600 KENETECH 56-100 wind turbines erected on 60- and 80-foot lattice towers. It’s located in a region known as the Collinsville-Montezuma Hills Wind Resource Area, designated by Solano County in 1987 as land suitable for wind energy development. According to Robert Righter’s book Wind Energy in America (p. 181), in 1987, U.S. Windpower, Inc. was the top wind turbine producer in the United States. U.S. Windpower changed its name to KENETECH Windpower in 1993. “The KENETECH 56-100 model which was put into operation in 1989 was a 56-foot diameter, 100 kW wind turbine,” says John Opris, operations manager at enXco V. Opris says the 56-100 has a variable pitch system where the blades pitch on the axis. “The variable pitch made this model more flexible so it could be adapted to the lower winds in the Montezuma Hills wind resource area,” says Opris. “Most of the Danish wind turbines used at that time had pitchless, or fixed, blades that worked better in areas like the Altamont Pass where winds could get up to 60-70 miles per hour (mph),” says Opris. WP 89 When U.S. Windpower started this Solano County wind farm, the company called the site WP 89. “In those days, wind farms were named according to when the development was formed,” says Opris. “So when U.S. Windpower started this project it was called ‘WP 89’. We called ourselves the ‘Solano Site.’” Opris and Kirk Garlick, enXco V site Facility Highlights Location: Birds Landing, Solano County, CA Size: 60 MW, approximately 2,300 acres Distance Between Towers: KENETECH 56-100: 70 ft.
