and most environment-friendly wind turbine technology to its project in California,” said Walker. enXco proposed to replace 90 of the 600 KENETECH 56-100 kW wind turbines with six GE 1.5 MW wind turbines. They would call the repow- ered portion of the wind farm, enXco V Repower. “Because we are permitted as a wind farm with 60 MW nameplate capacity,” says Opris, “the output of the facility had to remain the same.” Opris explains that the power purchase agreement with PG&E continues for another 10 years, but there are no constraints about what kind, or the number of wind turbines that produce the power. “However, the county did require that we completely remove the 90 KENETECH wind turbines we were replacing,” Opris said. enXco tore down the turbines, disassembled the towers, and removed the foundations of the 90 KENETECH towers before installing the six new GE 1.5 MW turbines. “Believe it or not, each disassembled 80-foot tower can fit neatly into just one or two pallets,” says Opris. Opris says the tear-down began in 2005. The old towers, machines, and foundations were completely removed within 60 days. Construction of the six new turbines began in October, 2005. “The first shovel was in the ground by October, but rains prevented actual construction for another six weeks,” says Opris. The repower work was completed, and the new wind turbines were operating by May 31, 2006.
