Wind Today - Q2 2008 - (Page 71) Industry Profile Years with Company: 4 Years in the Industry: Seven years in the wind industry; 13 years in the electricity industry. Born: Oxford, England Family: two nephews, one niece The best new wind product/service: The extending markets for environmental attributes and CO2 offsets. These allow the overall benefit of renewable generation to be quantified and move away from wind being seen as “a good thing.” What I like about the wind industry: The quality of the people that I work with, both in TransAlta Wind and the industry in general. With the speed to development of the industry, there is also no chance of ever being bored. Key to the growth of the industry: The recognition at all levels that wind power is a strategic resource to allow Canada to meet its business growth needs and environmental goals. The biggest trend in the industry: Amalgamation of developers with larger generation companies—often bringing a depth of overseas wind experience. What I predict for the industry in the next three years: Continued growth, with a move to more cross-over between Canada and the United States, to leverage access to North American turbine supply. Personal Highlights: Developing the Huron Wind project from a handshake, to an established partnership, and eventually the first commercial wind farm operating in Ontario. Hobbies: Skiing with enthusiasm—if not skill. Running — have just started running marathons. Chartered Engineer with the Institute of Mechanical Engineers, UK. Career: 1995-1999: Project Engineer for a fleet of nuclear power stations— Nuclear Electric, UK; 1999-2001: Station System Engineer for Sizewell B Power station, England; 2001-2003 Renewables Business Development Manager for British Energy—North America; 2002-2004: Corporate Secretary—Huron Wind LP, Ontario; 2003-2004: Power Marketer—Bruce Power, Ontario; 2004-to present: Business Development Manager—Vision Quest/TransAlta 2006-2009 term: CanWEA Board member 2007/2008 term: CanWEA Vice-chair My personal key to success: Find good people to work with, and interesting challenging projects to be involved in. My biggest challenge: Quantifying the way the widely varying Canadian markets will respond to the inclusion of Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and intermittent generation into their structure. I meet that challenge by: Finding smart, informed people and asking them lots of questions. Liz Cussans has served on the board of directors of the Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA) since 2006 and currently serves as the board’s vice-chair. “Being a member of the CanWEA Board has added to my appreciation of the complexities that affect the health and growth of the wind industry in Canada. Having worked in different roles in different Canadian markets, I try to bring the developers’ and operators’ viewpoints to the mix.” —Liz Cussans 71 http://www.transaltawind.com
