Wind Today - Q2 2008 - (Page 72) Industry Focus Bolton & Menk, Inc. Bolton & Menk, Inc. was founded in 1949 by John Bolton and Martin C. Menk, Jr. The Mankato, MN-based firm was incorporated in 1960, and is now an employee-owned company. The Midwest regional consulting engineering and land surveying firm specializes in surveying and mapping, as well as civil, water resources, environmental, and transportation engineering. Currently, Bolton & Menk employs 250 people, including a professional staff of 100 engineers and land surveyors. Accoring to Peter W. Blethen, L.S., survey division coordinator, the company has provided engineering services to more than 225 communities and agencies in Minnesota and Iowa, and has provided surveying, land development and environmental services for public and private clients. Industry Wind Industry Blethen says Bolton & Menk’s work in the cellular communication industry and their pipeline route survey work provided a natural progression to the wind industry. “The wind industry is growing rapidly and we are well situated and Site Assessment experienced to provide the survey support services for the required land services,” says Blethen. Blethen says the company operates 21 survey crews out of eight Minnesota and Iowa offices, with 14 licensed land surveyors supervising the crews. Their surveyors are licensed to practice in Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, and Wisconsin. Field crews consist of land surveyors, LSITs (Land Surveyor in Training) and technicians as needed. Blethen says wind energy projects require a wide variety of land surveying services including ALTA/ACSM land title surveys, boundary/topographic surveys, section corner remonumentation, easement preparation, construction staking, and route surveys. “Our field crews utilize the latest surveying technology, including Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and robotic total stations, to complete the proposed work in an efficient manner,” says Blethen. He says additional engineering services may also be provided as needed.
