Wind Today - Q2 2008 - (Page 74) Industry Focus Port of Corpus Christi Authority The Port of Corpus Christi is the seventh largest port in the United States in terms of tonnage. In 2007, the Port handled 89,319,693 short tons of break bulk, grain, chemicals, dry bulk, liquid bulk, and petroleum. Located approximately 150 miles north of the Mexican border on the Gulf of Mexico in south Texas, the Port of Corpus Christi has a 45 ft. channel depth. According to Michael Perez, director of business development, the Port has offered shippers a profitable alternative for more than 80 years. The first Port Commission was appointed in 1923. Industry Wind Industry Perez says the Port ‘s involvement with the wind industry began on November 7, 2006 when the BBC Plata docked at Cargo Dock 8 with nine Siemens wind turbines. Since then, the Port has expanded to provide port services and distribution for four major turbine suppliers. Perez says the Port has also helped bring a future national turbine blade testing facility to Corpus Christi and has begun working with a project T ransportation & Logistics manager to develop the first industrial wind farm at a port complex in the United States. The Port provides for ship reception, discharge, storage, and clearance of wind turbine components imported into the Texas Gulf Coast for distribution throughout Texas and the Midwest from Europe, Asia, and South America. “By expanding gates, open storage yards, and access routes into the port, we have been able to facilitate efficient and cost effective distribution operations for the shippers who use the port for their towers, blades, and nacelles,” says Perez. “Unlike most seaports, wind power is a major component of our general cargo business,” says Perez. “We see the Port of Corpus Christi as the most efficient and capable wind turbine seaport in the United States, for servicing both inland wind projects and eventually offshore projects in the Gulf of Mexico,” he concluded.
