Wind Today - Q2 2008 - (Page 79) Industry Focus HYTORC HYTORC, a division of the Unex Corporation, was founded in 1968 by John Junkers. The Mahwah, NJ-based company manufactures a full line of tensioning tools for all industries, and has service and distribution centers at 150 locations worldwide. According to Joachim Santen, HYTORC’s wind power growth manager, the company is the oldest and world’s largest manufacturer of hydraulic torque and tension tools with products that are CE, TUV and ISO9001:2000 approved. Santen says HYTORC has also established the HYTORC Service Network, so their tools maintain industrial requirements for speed, weight, durability, user-friendliness, and safety. Industry Wind Industry HYTORC began its association with the wind industry in 1998 at a German wind farm, and in the United States in 2005. “Wind energy has become one of the fastest growing industries within the renewable energy market,”says Santen. “From the planning stages through installation and maintenance of wind turbines, reliable partners are needed,” he continues. With a decade of wind energy experience, HYTORC’s team of wind power specialists provide expertise in field surveys, plant optimization, and offer T orque/T ension Systems field and classroom training, says Santen. According to Santen, these services, combined with HYTORC’s hydraulic and tension equipment, provide a solid foundation for engineering, installation, and maintenance. Two of HYTORC’s hydraulic torque and tension systems used for wind energy projects are the Avanti system and the Stealth. The Avanti is a square drive torque wrench that can be used for torque as well as tension, making hydraulic tensioners unnecessary. Santen says the Avanti offers hands-free operation on bolting applications with the use of a remote control. The Stealth is a low-clearance hex link tool and is equipped with a dual piston system that increases bolting speed. When the tool operates in the low torque range, just one of the two piston systems activates the tool so the high oil-flow of the HYTORC hydraulic pumps can be converted into the appropriate bolting speed. “The power of HYTORC comes from the experience and quality of its people,” says Santen. “Our experienced team has one principal goal: dependable results that reduce risk and uncertainty,” he concludes.
