Focus Magazine - Spring 2015 - 5

FROM THE PRESIDENT
John Sjovall

New Year,
New Directions
At the end of
the day, LTEN is
about people.

S

pring is always a good time for reflection
and growth. We're putting away the
winter coats both figuratively and
literally, and we're seeing ideas bud like trees in
the backyard. It is the time for new objectives,
new fiscal years, the annual business cycle
begins again and we feel a burst of hope in our
businesses, our careers, our clients and
ourselves.
With all that in mind, it seems appropriate
to begin the first Focus issue of 2015 with some
comments on the growth of LTEN, and a
spotlight on our new direction. We had an
exciting 2014, saying goodbye to the SPBT
name and transitioning from an association to
a network. By all signs, 2015 is going to
continue that forward momentum.
at momentum starts with a change in the
leadership of our full-time team at LTEN. I am
pleased to welcome Dawn Brehm into the role
of executive director. Many of you know Dawn,
she has been a longtime member of LTEN, and
a board of directors leader before joining the
LTEN staff full-time as chief operating officer.
is January, Dawn took over from Kevin
Kruse, when he departed to pursue new
professional opportunities.
It wasn't an automatic ascension, let me
assure you. e LTEN Board of Directors conducted an extensive search for the right leader.
We had quite a few highly qualified candidates,
both from inside our industry and from association management backgrounds. We personally
met with many of them to ensure we selected
the right person to lead our full-time team and
help us continue to drive forward.
As it turned out, that right person was
already here. Dawn's experience and her history

with LTEN were certainly factors, but not the
only reasons she was given the promotion.
Dawn shined as chief operating officer, leading
efforts to recruit new members and grow our
network, but what really made her stand out
were her ideas and plans to move LTEN
forward. You'll hear more about those plans as
they take fruition, so stay tuned: Dawn is now
writing a new column in Focus, called
Directions. at will be a great resource to keep
you connected with the evolution of LTEN.
I know Dawn will be too humble to tell you
much about herself, so let me handle that for
her. She has had an impressive career before
joining the LTEN team, with a broad base of
life sciences experience - including both
pharma and medical and diagnostic devices -
leading both sales and marketing teams in our
industry. Among her career highlights, she was
vice president of sales training at
GlaxoSmithKline from 2008 to 2010.
At the end of the day, LTEN is about people:
Connecting with people, learning from one
another, sharing ideas and moving our industry
ahead as a team. Of course many of us are
business competitors, but we're also members
of the same community, and growth benefits us
all. Dawn's widespread experience makes her
the ideal choice to lead our collective efforts.
Take a moment to read Dawn's column in
this issue. But more importantly, take a
moment to email Dawn at dbrehm@L-TEN.org
Send your congratulations if you'd like, send
your ideas, your interests, your needs and your
willingness to get involved.
It's spring, and here we grow again. Don't just
wait for growth to happen, plant some seeds
yourself and watch as the garden blossoms. I

John Sjovall is president of LTEN and executive director, sales training & development, at Daiichi Sankyo. Email
John at jsjovall@dsi.com.
