FROM THE PRESIDENT John Sjovall Put a Bow on It! So that's it: Not goodbye, but see you around. A s the saying goes, "all good things must come to an end." Bittersweet, but it's the natural flow of life and business, and a true reality for me in 2015: First I transitioned to a new company and now my LTEN presidential term comes to a close. What a great two years! A time of many changes: In life, life sciences, healthcare and at LTEN. It has been a personally and professionally fulfilling time for me as well: I've made new friends, forged new relationships and helped our network and hopefully our industry transition into the future. It has been an experience only a rare few of my predecessors have enjoyed. In January 2014, I started as president of SPBT, but its days were numbered. Just a few short months later, SPBT reinvented itself as LTEN, transforming from a "society" to a "network," a move to align more with the needs of our membership and to position our network for success in the future. e call for networking, in fact, is one of the proudest accomplishments as president. Of course networking has always been a need, but as our world turns more social and technology brings people closer together everyday, the importance of networking has skyrocketed. We all have a critical mission on behalf of our organizations, clients and patients, and the fact that we (even as competitors) can share ideas and best practices, inspirations and knowledge that directly makes healthcare and the patients we serve better is truly amazing! As I reflect back, it isn't just about the challenges and successes; I fondly recall the sense of fun we've worked to bring to LTEN, especially at our annual conference, the MD&D Summit and our mixers . You have to have fun ... I don't have to tell you that "what learners enjoy, they also remember." In 2014, I am sure I surprised many (including myself) when I took the stage as a Roman legionnaire to tell you "friends, trainers and educators" about the new LTEN name and focus. is past summer, I hope you enjoyed my rendition of "LTEN John" in a better, sportier and more flamboyant costume, complete with feathered boa. ese were fun ways to kick off our events before the serious learning began. I know my successor will build her own traditions! Speaking of my successor, if you haven't already heard, Mary Myers of Bayer HealthCare is taking over as president of LTEN in January 2016. You can learn more about Mary in Dawn Brehm's Directions column (page 13). I know you'll enjoy working with Mary as much as I do, and please give her the same support and encouragement I've enjoyed these past two years. Before I hand over the reins, I want to thank each and every LTEN member for your support and participation. I also want to thank my fellow board members, and the LTEN Advisory Council. If what I did as LTEN president ever looked easy, it's because of the support and assistance of these dedicated learning leaders. I especially want to thank Dawn Brehm and all the LTEN staff, who've helped me in innumerable ways. A leader cannot lead without a great team, and I was graced with and grateful for this committed group of professionals. So that's it: Not goodbye, but see you around; involved as an active LTEN member, as a network resource and as a friend in the years ahead. Let me close by urging you all to continue to work together, work hard and work toward making learning and healthcare better each and every day. It has been my pleasure to serve. ank you. ■ John Sjovall is president of LTEN and senior director, commercial capabilities & training, for Collegium Pharmaceuticals.
