Focus Magazine - Fall 2017 - 18

COVERSTORY

The learning and development
department had to convince senior
leadership that logistical challenges could be
overcome and learning objectives could be met.

with support from Carole CarterCleaver, senior director training and
development, advocated dedicating
part of the meeting to an exhibit
hall/museum-type experience. For a
half day, instead of going to
workshops or watching keynote
speakers, learners would travel from
booth-to-booth to get content in
small-group sessions. e booths were
themed so each small group session,
lasting less than 30 minutes, was a
new experience. Examples of exhibit
booths include:
* An exhibit dedicated to
understanding the warning and
precautions of the products, made
up to look like a road construction
area with safety messages.

* A patient-focused exhibit designed
to look like a patient room in a
long-term-care facility.
* A dedicated marketing booth that
allowed for the marketing team to
engage with learners.
Some booths were staffed with personnel that walked participants
through content. Other booths were
unstaffed and showed videos and provided guided worksheets. Representative participation was monitored using
"learning passports" that were
stamped during each session.
Otsuka measures a Kirkpatrick
Level 1 response to every meeting
session. e learner response
demonstrated the possibilities of the
concept. Learners were engaged and

key stakeholders got to interact with
participants in smaller group sessions.
Given the success of the meeting,
the training department asked, "Why
can't we do this for all the content of
an entire meeting?" Senior training
managers started to envision an
entirely interactive meeting that was
learner-focused.

Gaining Buy-In
Carter-Cleaver and the training
managers believed the positive results
from the pilot could be repeated;
however, they recognized challenges
in scaling the process to include
hundreds of additional representatives
from multiple sales forces. e
