The Missing Ingredient for
Field Skills Trainer Programs

the starting point
in creating a field
sales training
program.

e've recently seen the playoff seasons
for NHL hockey and NBA basketball,
and baseball is now in full swing
(sorry, no pun intended), and food always
complements a game. But when food is missing
an ingredient, it just doesn't work. You
eventually throw it out as you know it isn't
hitting the mark!
Same goes for creating a field skills trainer
(FST) program. Key ingredients must be
included to make it work or it will eventually be
thrown out or re-cooked.
Vision has to be the starting point in
creating this kind of program. What is the

purpose? Is it dedicated headcount, full-time
trainers in the field or is it a developmental
part-time role for field sales personnel? Is it a
feeding ground into your management
development process, or into the home office as
an entree? Is field sales training an extension of
the HQ training department, where they assist
in new hire training classes and help onboard
new hires? Is there compensation provided for
the FST and if so how much is appropriate?
What is the length of time to serve in the role
and can you re-up? What if there isn't someone
in the district who wants to do it? How much
time can the FST dedicate to their training role
