The Evolving Role of
the Field Trainer

What was once a
utility player
position is rapidly
becoming a more
structured and
sophisticated role.

T

raditionally, in the life sciences industry,
the field trainer was a sales person who
was field-based and whose job it was to
train and mentor new sales representatives on
the competencies they needed in order to be
successful at their jobs. ey were solid
performers with their own territories and no
compliance issues who were chosen by their
district or field managers. e relationship
between field trainers and new hires was a peer
relationship, one focused on actualizing
previously received training. ey performed
ride-alongs and offered advice on everything
from how best to set up the trunk of the car to
ways to improve access to medical
practitioners.
Recently, the field-training position has
begun to evolve to meet the needs of a

changing marketplace. What was once a utility
player position is rapidly becoming a more
structured and sophisticated role. ere are a
number of reasons for this change, primarily:
* Need to expand training at the local level
* Speed to impact in new markets
* Tighter compliance standards
* Increased number of specialty products
Today's field trainers need a greater range of
skills and experiences, prompting the question
- how are life sciences learning &
development teams meeting this new
challenge?
To answer this question, we spoke to
learning strategy experts from corporate
pharmaceutical sales departments and select
vendor partners providing services to those
