editor’s column “L Melissa Walters, MHA, CPCS, CPMSM Director, Medical Staff Svcs. & Network Credentialing Kettering Medical Center 3535 Southern Blvd Kettering, OH 45429 PH: (937) 395-8324 FAX: (937) 395-8357 melissa.walters@khnetwork.org Life’s About Changing, Nothing Ever Stays the Same Association, which held its first meeting this year. Additionally, CMS has announced revisions to some of its CoPs. The article in this issue outlines some of the key takeaways that MSPs need to know. Personally, I am excited to hear about the clarification allowing one governing body to oversee multiple hospitals in a multihospital system. Chris Mobley’s article “CVO Certification/ Accreditation from a Surveyor’s Point of View” also highlights changes. One change I found most enlightening is the trend of healthcare systems developing an internal CVO, which is currently one of the most challenging changes for me. The In the Legal Loop article also discusses changes with physician and hospital contracting. Jennifer M. Nelson Carney takes the time to educate us on contracting and what MSPs need to know. This is valuable information. As MSPs, we must have contracts to cover just about anything we pay physicians for these days. MSPs have also been battling over board certification recently. Do we require certification as a qualification to be a member of the medical staff? What about maintenance of certification? The article “ABMS Sets Time Limits for Board Eligibility” in this issue helps us understand this changing culture. There’s one thing, however, that never changes: dealing with incomplete applications. Check out the Bylaw Bits section for tips that will help you manage these applications. Unfortunately, the need for peer review has also not changed, but the way we approach it can. Dean White outlines this approach in “Doing the Right Thing for the Right Reason.” I hope this edition of SYNERGY not only has you excited about the upcoming changes for NAMSS members, but also the changes our profession is embracing. These are indeed exciting times if we allow them to be. “The world hates change, yet it is the only thing that has brought progress.” —Charles F. Kettering ife’s about changing, nothing ever stays the same” is one of my favorite lyrics by Patty Loveless. Most of us know this saying: “There are only two things certain in this life: death and taxes.” Well, I would like to add change to that. It doesn’t matter what in life you’re referring to, one thing is for certain: We are all dealing with constant change! This issue of SYNERGY is a perfect example of change. With our July/August issue, NAMSS is excited to unveil the premier issue of its digital magazine, E-Synergy. In addition to this print version of SYNERGY, NAMSS will be sending out a link to an electronic version. This digital supplement is essentially a live, interactive version of the magazine. Members can expect the following features out of E-Synergy: • Ability to access any story displayed on the cover, table of contents and advertiser index by clicking the text link. This works for any email or web address in both articles and advertisements. • Archive of current and past issues as well as a keyword search within the archive • User-adjustable zoom with the option to save your preference • Tabs throughout the issue to obtain subscription information, archived issues, table of contents and thumbnail images • Offline version that can be saved as Adobe AIR or PDF • Capability to search the text of all issues, from inside or outside the digital edition • Capability to bookmark, add notes, print and forward pages • Capability to select viewing modes (i.e., single page or two-page spread) NAMSS members should also be aware of the upcoming changes to the 2013 CPMSM Content Outline, a brief synopsis of which is included in this edition. Also make sure to check out the article by the State Affiliation Task Force for information on how to become a state affiliate. I also would like to recognize and congratulate the Wyoming 6 / SYNERGY july/a ugust 2012
