COACHES LEAGUE

You led the AHL in goals in the 2016-17 season. What was the key to
your success? "First and foremost, the guys I was playing with. I played with (former
Yale star) Kenny Agostino (Morristown, N.J.), and he's a prolific passer. I played with
Andrew Agozzino and Sammy Blais this year, too. I tried to put myself in good scoring
positions and they found me. It's one thing to find yourself in a good position. It's another
to get a good pass. The coaching staff has let me work through the season. They've given
me a lot of opportunities. Not every shift or game is going to be great. They understand
that. They give me leeway to work through those low points, so it's been nice."

What has the relationship with fellow Agostino been like? "It's been
unbelievable. I've learned a lot from him. Just watching him practice and play every
day. I ask him questions when I can. I watch how he approaches the game. I've
learned a lot. We have a great relationship off the ice. It's been an unbelievable
opportunity to play with him, and we've tried to make the most of it."
What does it mean to be in the playoffs with the Wolves?
"It's everything. That's what it's all about. It's what we're playing for this
time of year. It's the start of a new season. We have a great group of guys.
We have a lot of fun, which is huge. We're all on the same page, pulling
for each other. It's a long season and it can be stressful, so if you enjoy
the guys you play with and are able to laugh, it makes everything on
the ice easier. It's a great atmosphere."

What was it like to have played some time
in the NHL this season? "It's a dream come true. It's
what I wanted to do since I started playing this game. To
get this opportunity is unbelievable. You get that taste and
you want more of it. That's going to improve my work ethic in the
postseason and into the offseason. Just keep pushing for it and get
some more opportunities."

Your offseason preparation includes time spent in a
remote location near the St. Lawrence River. Why? "I like to
think I'm self-motivated. I think I know what I need to work on. I like
to have the freedom to do what I want to do and train the way I want to
train. If I want to wake up and go for a bike ride, I can do that. I don't like to
have a certain schedule. In August and September, I try to stay in a more remote
place and stay away from the distractions and mentally unwind and decompress
and get ready for the season. That down time for me is when I try to regroup and
get ready for the long haul."
What's the best piece of advice you ever received? "The best piece
is just try to learn something new every day. Playing with Kenny and guys like
that, there's so much to learn there. If my faceoffs aren't going well, I talk to
(Brad) Malone and have him work through those situations. You can learn a
lot through your teammates. Guys, especially at this level, do everything well
and a couple things exceptionally well. You can learn a lot from those guys."
What's your favorite thing to do when you're not playing
hockey? "During the season, I keep it pretty low-key, movies and
stuff like that. Offseason, I'm a big fisherman, so I spend a lot of time
on the water. Growing up in New York in the winters, it was outdoor
pond hockey. During the summer, it's nice to get out on the water. Its
relaxing."

What do you want readers to know about you?
"The biggest thing for me has been the coaching staff that's been
the biggest difference for me this year, getting that opportunity.
I wouldn't be able to do what I've done if it wasn't for them. They
understand the players and what guys need. They've given me
the freedom to figure things out on my own. You don't have to
worry about looking over your shoulder every play or what they're
thinking. They've given me freedom, and that's been the
key to mine and our success."
