Attorney Gelso is the President of the Pennsylvania
Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. He concentrates his practice primarily in the area of state
and federal criminal defense litigation and has
handled many high-profile cases throughout his
career. Attorney Gelso has been an active member
of the Criminal Justice Act (CJA) Panel for the U.S.
District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania
from 2002 through 2009 and for the U.S. Court of
Appeals for the Third Circuit since 2006. He has also
lectured at Continuing Legal Education Seminars
sponsored by PACDL.

most cases, an opening statement
in a trial contains a roadmap for
the jury to follow. After surveying
our members, PACDL decided to introduce
a new recurring section of For the Defense
entitled "Opening Statement" to provide our
readers with a roadmap of where PACDL has
been recently as well as our path ahead.
This year has been an exciting one
for PACDL, filled with an infectious spirit
of excellence as we continue to educate,
advocate and inspire. Our Continuing Legal
Education programs have taken us across the
Commonwealth, providing our members with
the tools necessary to distinguish a PACDL
criminal defense lawyer from others lawyers.
We have filed briefs as amicus curiae in cases,
supported and opposed both legislation and
rule changes and served on statewide commissions. We have also increased our numbers
through membership events throughout the
Commonwealth and provided new services to
our members including this publication, For
the Defense. All of this and more would not
have been possible without the hard work
of dedicated member volunteers and staff,
which inspired the Board of Directors to meet
over the summer and participate in a board
retreat to set our course for the future.
Our 2016 seminar schedule continues our
tradition of excellence in education with the
best and the brightest instructing on new and
innovative ways to defend the accused. We
began the 2016 CLE calendar with the DUI
and Motor Vehicle Law seminar at the Hotel
Monaco in Pittsburgh,1 moved to Temple Law
School in March to provide Getting to Not
Guilty - Jury Trial Advocacy Skills in Mistaken
Identification Cases training,2 and culminated
our spring lineup with the two (2) day Joint
Annual Conference at the Hilton Harrisburg
in April.3 In addition to the outstanding
