BOUTIQUE HOTEL OFFERS RESPITE FROM KOLKATA
Creating a refuge from the cacophony that characterizes
Kolkata was the underlying goal for designers of the Barsana
Boutique Hotel in the Indian city's Science Park district.
"This brand's owners are based in Siliguri, a small town in
Bengal," explains Dhruva Kalra, who led a team of designers
from New Delhi-based Ravish Mehra Deepak Kalra in
creating the 7-story, 45-key property. "They wanted to create
a niche for their hotel in Kolkata by creating a one-of-a-kind
property that served as a retreat from the hustle-bustle of
The hotel seeks to trumpet its uniqueness both outside
and in. "The hotel's façade bears an imperfect texture created
by the use of locally procured stone," says Kalra. "The lines of
that exterior are reflected in a series of rhythmic lines within
the main lobby."
To help engender the desired escape-from-it-all feel, the
designers took such steps as incorporating natural stained
wooden finishes, warm colors and a peacock rendered in
brass into the hotel's entry experience. In addition, the
hotel's accommodations feature a cream-dominated color
palette and light woods, accented with bright yellows that
add visual energy.
"These spaces create a hotel that is not just a place for a
temporary stay, but one that will leave a lasting impression,"
