Today's hottest properties don't toe the party line.
As ForrestPerkins' and Wimberly Interiors' redo of the
Fairmont Washington, D.C., Georgetown shows, large-scale
hotels are big enough for designers to cross the aisle.
From Fibs to Filibusters, agreeing is not the Capitol Hill way of doing business.
It also doesn't have to be the modus operandi for the masterminds behind the big
hotels, such as the Fairmont Washington, D.C., Georgetown that are changing the
design landscape. Just ask Deborah Lloyd Forrest, president, ForrestPerkins (whose
firm oversaw the renovation of the public areas) and Ayten Nuhoglu, designer,
Wimberly Interiors, a design studio of WATG (which renovated the 415 guest rooms).
"We were inspired by the geometry of an aerial map of the city," says Lloyd Forrest.
For Wimberly's Nuhoglu, it's more a matter of what goes on at street level. "For us, it
was about layering in both the power of politics (men in suits, gray, masculine,
tailored, balanced with a soft accent of color much like the lining of a man's suit,
applied to the rooms) and the behind-the-scenes power of D.C. (scandals, dark and
sexy) which was applied to the elevator lobby and corridors."
Unlike today's lawmakers, though, the two design teams found plenty of common
ground. Both wanted to create intimacy within the spaces without impeding traffic
flow. Lloyd Forrest and her team (the firm also served as architects for the project)
used every item in their toolkit, from the typical ones of area rugs and seating arrangements, to larger statements such as screening elements and a glass wall, draped with
an acoustical fabric to dampen the noise from the porte cochere.
Nuhoglu's team, meantime, turned to FF&E that offers residential comfort-think
ditching the desk in favor of a round table built into a chaise lounge or adding in one
large piece that holds a TV.
