art is liFe to Berke. Not only did she pursue degrees in architecture and fine
art, her collaboration with gallery/hospitality mix masters Steve Wilson and
Laura Lee Brown of 21c Museum Hotels spans more than a decade and includes
all seven of the company's properties thus far, as well as its upcoming outposts,
including one in Kansas City, Missouri. For more on how she helps bring those
projects to life, see "Heavy Mettlers" on page 40. Berke's firm recently won a
2017 Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum award for interior design. In
addition to her work on boutique hotels, Berke has designed such spaces as Bard
College's Conservatory of Music and is dean of the Yale School of Architecture.
Forget about being a "starchitect." Yes, Kuma has been honored by
such eminent organizations as the Architectural Institute of Japan and
received France's Decoration Officier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.
His firm has also landed the commission to design the Olympic
Stadium in Tokyo ahead of the 2020 Olympics. Despite all that fame,
Kuma believes in keeping ego out of spatial volumes and showing
respect for nature. For more on how he did that by incorporating the
concept of a Japanese garden into a restaurant in Portland, Oregon,
turn to "Raw Ingredients" on page 32.
PARTNER | P3 DESIGN COLLECTIVE
great minds don't have to think alike. Benesch believes creativity is
born from collaboration. After serving as the vice president of hospitality
design at Hughes Design Associates (HDA) for 13 years, she teamed up
with Monika Sibert and Tiphanie Purkat in 2012 to launch a boutique
design firm whose name reflects the power of three. "We wanted a
workplace where all ideas are heard and where we can challenge one
another to think about design solutions a little differently," says Benesch.
For an example of the trio's immersive style in action, check out the
"Design Deconstructed" spread on pages 18-19.
