NEW HOTEL IN NEW ORLEANS
PLAYS UP ITS PLUGGED-IN PAST
The recently opened NOPSI Hotel is housed in the former HQ of New Orleans'
public utility company/transit operator. First debuting in 1927 as the home to
the New Orleans Public Service Inc. (NOPSI), the nine-story brick edifice
(which was designed by Favrot and Livaudais and is listed on the National
Register of Historic Places) is now home to a 217-key hotel that's owned by
Building and Land Technology and managed by Salamander Hotels & Resorts.
The building's makeover, by architect of record/general
contractor Woodward Design + Build and Kent Interior
Design, makes numerous references to the property's
previous incarnation, including the lobby's renovated
vaulted ceilings, sweeping arches, ornamental columns,
brass grills and stone terrazzo flooring.
The hotel's F&B outlets-the Public Service signature
restaurant, the Above the Grid rooftop pool and bar, and the
underCURRENT Bar & Patio adjacent to the lobby-also include nods to the
building's past. Public Service, for example, features a two-story glass façade and
exposed brick, while underCURRENT's patio features wrought-iron accents
reminiscent of the courtyards found throughout the Crescent City.
Project participants say the hotel's guest rooms, which range from 350 to
800 sq. ft., feature refined furnishings and artwork inspired by NOPSI's heritage.
Guest bathrooms incorporate a spa-like tile design and oversized showers. The
hotel's top floor is home to the spacious Power Suite, as well as four suites
offering an in-room version of the Salamander Spa experience.
But perhaps the most unique way that the hotel connects with its past is
through its circular logo-created by Designs to a T-which resembles the thousands of manhole covers around the city that still bear the NOPSI acronym. The
result: numerous underfoot advertisements for the hotel, which is a member of
the Preferred Hotels & Resorts LVX Collection and Historic Hotels of America.
We are excited about moving
forward as one of the largest pureplay hotel portfolios anchored by
iconic hotel brands in the economy
and midscale segments."

company as president and ceo.
