deliver a hint of tongue-and-cheek humor with the message, "Shhh!
Dreaming up my next big adventure."
Many modern explorers set on rural destinations are less
concerned with brand-loyalty points and more inclined to choose
independent hoteliers who practice what they preach. In the age
of mass production and modular construction, the Western
Front Hotel shows creating a small-scale boutique in a smalltown environment requires meticulous attention to detail and
close collaboration with the community if designers want to
attract travelers and locals alike.
"We didn't receive the traditional set of shop drawings or
submittals, but did things more design-build for this project. We
were working with materials that were available, so adjustments
had to be made as we went along to achieve the desired look,"
says Schultz. "Although it added a lot more coordination to have
things made locally, it did create a sense of pride for the community. In all of these items, you can see the dignity in the craftsmanship shining through."
