It took a village to deliver the unforgettable experience that architects in Delft,
The Netherlands, dreamed of as they
designed a 230 x 360-foot vaulted ceiling
for the town's new train station. Print
provider MakeCover (makecover.nl)
worked with Geerdes Design, Mecanoo
architects, and virtual reality and game
designer Candy Games to visualize and
produce a series of graphics based on
historical maps of the area from the
1870s. The image, printed on an HP
Latex printer onto 3M IJ70-114 film with
3M 8520 laminate, comes together on
both sides of nearly 2000 aluminum slats,
each extending roughly 8 inches from the
ceiling. And the team left no detail
unpolished; even the map's due-north
orientation is accurate.
