REGISTRATION GOES HIGH-SPEED
In the early days of digital cutting, registering cut to print was
a manual, time-consuming process involving the use of taped
guides, templates, or overlays. All that changed with the advent
of registration systems that enabled capturing register marks
with a digital camera, providing data for intelligent vision software to automatically locate graphics as well as compensate for
stretch, skew, and other deviations. While accurate and reliable,
this type of registration generally involved a balancing act between printing/reading a sufficient number of marks for precise
registration - and not putting too many, which can unnecessarily
slow down production.
No matter how fast the beam (with attached camera) can
travel, it takes time to cover the entire working area and capture
each mark, especially on large-format systems. The problem
is exacerbated with substrates like fabrics that are notoriously
prone to stretch and therefore require a large number of marks
to ensure accuracy. Not surprisingly, there are applications
where the process of capturing register marks actually takes
longer than the cutting.
To remedy this situation, Zünd recently introduced a couple
of game-changing advances in registration technology. The Over
Cutter Camera OCC captures all register marks visible on the cutting surface in one shot. In a matter of seconds, Zünd Cut Center
evaluates the data, compensates for any deviations, and proceeds
to cutting. For some jobs, this translates into productivity gains of
30 percent or more. For register mark capture via beam-mounted
ICC camera in combination with the latest version of Zünd Cut
Center, several options are now available for speeding up the registration process by reading only the marks necessary for the desired
level of cut-to-print accuracy and skipping all the rest. With either
registration method, Zünd users can now achieve high accuracy
and significant increases in capture speed and overall productivity.
