feature story Learn about the latest developments and applications for PSAs. Lisa Castillo
KIWO he use of pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) spans many industries. In the aeronautics industry, pressure sensitives are found in interior instrumentation, decals, communications gear, and decorative items. In medical, PSAs are found on decals and markings on devices. In the automotive industry, PSAs are used for interior gauges (Figure 1), decals, exterior skins and decal graphics, and many other applications. In the household-appliance industry (Figure 2) they’re used for appliance controls on dishwashers, clothes washers/driers, and even for bonding heavy double glass for oven doors. In the electronics industry, PSAs are used for interior and some exterior instru-

t

mentation, computers and computer-game devices, durable labels, membrane switches, nameplates, and cell phones, tablets, and more. In-store applications include shelf-liner promos, point-of-sale displays, counter mats, and temporary and permanent window decals. These are just some of the widespread and ever-growing uses for PSAs. This class of adhesive has developed rapidly in the past years, making it one of the more dynamic areas of bonding technology. PSAs can be roughly divided into two groups: transfer tapes and liquids. In the case of the transfer tape, the adhesive is supplied already coated on a release liner,

which then must be die cut after which it can be applied—usually manually—to the substrate. Liquids, in contrast, are coated onto a substrate by the user. While this can be done by all conventional coating means, including curtain coating, spraying, anilox, and knife, the most versatile way to do this is by screen printing. Here, the adhesive is printed selectively onto the substrate, just like an ink. After curing/drying, a release liner is usually applied. Screen printing a PSA is by far the most cost effective means of producing a pressuresensitive part, because it skips many of the cumbersome steps involved in processing transfer tapes.
