The latest endeavor from Kimora Lee Simmons is a line of skin-care products with packaging that makes a strong—and fitting—statement.

K

imora Lee Simmons didn’t want her new line of skin-care products named after her. But the packaging still has her name all over it—metaphorically, at least—with a distinctly Asian design, an understated palette and a lean font. All of these graphic elements reflect the woman who has been a model for Chanel, a fashion executive and an author of self-help books, among other things. In February 2012, Simmons added skin-care maven to her résumé with the launch of Shinto Clinical. Shinto refers to an ancient Japanese religion and a set of practices. A key component of practicing this religion is establishing a connection between the present day and the ancient past.

“The name was perfect,” says Anna Urban, creative managing partner and strategy director for the design firm QNY Creative (New York, NY) and brand strategist for the line. “We were fusing ancient Japanese ingredients with modern elements and modern science for the product line.” The mixture of opposites—old and new, science and spirituality—would come to define the line, both the product and its packaging.

Moving toward minimal
The product line has one star ingredient, says Urban: Omegapearl-18, which comprises pearl powder, wakame kelp, beta-glucan mushroom and omega oils. This recipe creates products with a strong efficacy, Urban says, and QNY wanted to bring that same strength to the packaging. “We were looking for a clean and minimal look,” QNY creative director Ezio Burani explains. The word “minimal” comes up repeatedly when talking to the people who created Shinto Clinical. The challenge was to achieve that minimal look but not wind up with a package that was boring. To that end, the team turned to a silver-and-black palette, a clean font, a Japanese Sakura cherry blossom motif, and a logo comprising four Ss that was inspired by a key to an antique Chinese chest.
