but steadfast, Cage observed that an audience in flight “made all kinds of interesting sounds.” Cage’s view is still seen as a radically inclusive take on what counts as music. If you apply his view to fine art, it’s hard to say what wouldn’t be included. Then
again, he didn’t say all sound was classical music, so perhaps he would’ve been comfortable with signs as art, if not fine art. Are signs intended as art? More than one designer would say “yes.” But where’s the line? Is every prefabricated McDonald’s sign equivalent to a Picasso? What about handpainted signs? Goldleaf? Signs incorporating portraits of business owners? Kim also carefully considers intentions, and emailed me after our interview to clarify her delineation of neon signs versus neon art: “Fine art and neon signs are two different realms. I just want to be clear that no neon signs are crossovers into fine art if they were built as signs for advertising. If the sign was later obtained by a fine artist, put into his/her work and used in a different context [the context of fine art], then that changes the neon sign’s original intent. If we want to call a neon sign a piece of ‘Americana’ or ‘Folk Art,’ then I can agree with that.
