listed products at the time of manufacture, indicates the product complies with UL’s applicable requirements when it leaves the factory, and that it was manufactured under UL’s follow-up service at an authorized location. Obviously, UL can’t continue to certify a sign once it leaves the signshop, because it could have been modified. Further, when a UL-certified sign is field-modified, UL can’t confirm that the sign continues to meet applicable certification requirements (unless the field modifications are evaluated by UL via an on-site UL inspection). However, an effective alternative to a UL-field evaluation is to utilize retrofit product kits specifically investigated and certified by UL for installation in ULlisted luminaires and signs. UL says its mark appears on more than 22 billion products per year, worldwide, which explains why it can’t field-inspect every sign modification. Prior to promising a UL-certified sign rebuild, learn the current UL requirements; typical of all electrical- safety conventions, UL’s rules are exact, intricate and uncompromising. SloanLED is also introducing its SignBOX II and PosterBOX Slim lamps for cabinet and poster signs. www.sloanled.com Osram Sylvania Osram Sylvania’s (Danvers, MA) BoxLED Back and BackLED line’s flat-ray technologies feature lenses that disperse light for wide distribution on the signface. The easily installed tube system comes in standard fluorescent lengths. www.permlightforsigns.com US LED US LED’s (Houston, TX) Tandem2 is designed to replace fluorescent lamps in sign-cabinet lighting applications. It features the company’s patented, quick-connect system and is available pre-assembled in 4-ft., single-sided sections with eight LED modules.
