INDUSTRY NEWS B y Wa d e S w o r m s t e d t ISA's Lori Anderson Honored by NAM Intl. Sign Assn. President & CEO Lori Anderson received the Council of Mfg. Assn.'s (CMA) Leadership Award on January 17, during the CMA's Winter Leadership Conference. The award, voted on by the recipients' industry peers, is given annually to a chief staff officer who has done the most to further the CMA's mission. CMA, an arm of the National Assn. of Manufacturers, comprises more than 200 U.S. manufacturing trade associations that work together on behalf of the broader manufacturing sector. In 2013, ISA member sign companies participated in NAM's Manufacturing Summit on Capitol Hill, to discuss such topics as health care and the economy with members of Congress and their staffs. In the fall, eight national sign companies opened their doors as part of Sign Manufacturing Day, a NAM-ISA initiative, to improve workforce development by showcasing opportunities in the on-premisesign and visual- communications industries to highschool and college students. Anderson Mimaki Launches SMART Program Mimaki USA (Suwanee, GA) is announcing a new educational training program, entitled SMART (School of Mimaki Application and Resource Training), that will be implemented the first quarter of 2014. Mimaki will instruct and educate dealers and their end-user customers on the utilization, operation and servicing of the many Mimaki products. Worth, Los Angeles and New Jersey to host the instructional and training programs. The SMART Program will encompass: * Field service training for Mimaki dealers nationwide. * Customer instruction on vehicle/fleet wraps and graphics. * Training classes on the methods and workflow of digital printing on textile and apparel media. * Classes about the use of Mimaki UV LED tabletop printers to serve the awards, trophy and promotionalproducts marketplaces. Mimaki also has plans to offer advanced certification courses under the SMART Program. Advanced courses will include "Train the Trainer" and higher levels of curriculum. World Sign Associates Announces 2013-14 Board of Directors At its 2013 annual meeting, held in Baltimore, World Sign Associates (WSA) inducted its 2013-2014 board of directors. The group's new president, Bill Montero, leads Tube Art Signs & Sports Displays (Bellevue, WA). VP Jeff Young helps operate Young Electric Sign Co.-SLC (Salt Lake City). WSA's new secretary/ treasurer is Chris Lewis of Lewis Sign Co. (Slate Hill, NY). Paul Fuchsel of LaCrosse Sign Co. (La Crescent, MN), will counsel WSA as its immediate past president. Jerry Righthouse will continue his ongoing position as WSA executive vice president. IN M E M OR I A M Ken Long (1939-2013) Ken Long, whose sign-industry career spanned more than 40 years, died December 3 due to complications following a heart procedure. Born March 20, 1939, Long worked with Baker Signs, Van Bruggen Signs, Beverly Sign Co. and Krager Signs. Later in his career, he opened his own sign company, Ad-Craft Signs, in Oxnard, CA. The Oklahoma native was one of Selmer and Ruth Long's six children. An Army veteran, Long married Joanne Dorazio, whom he met while stationed at Nike Missile Base in Valparaiso, IN. The couple had five children. Long worked full-time until the late 1980's, when he was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease and unfortunately 78 SIGNS OF THE TIMES February 2014 had to retire from his business and painting.
