es, to the surprise of many, I
am leaving ST. I'll still be working
in the industry (but not for an ST
competitor), so I hope to still see
many of you at industry tradeshows
and other future interactions.
My 16-year tenure at ST has been
a rewarding and enriching experience. In that time, I've come to
know hundreds, perhaps thousands,
of sign-industry professionals. I've
learned a great deal from so many
of you.
For my Strictly Commercial
"swan song," I've compiled eight
of my favorite projects to highlight
in this column. I hope you'll enjoy
reminiscing about these handsome
signs as much as I did. It's truly
been a pleasure getting to know so
many of you during my ST career,
and I sincerely hope our paths cross
in the future. n
Timber Signs (Ofterschwang, Germany) built this distinctive, interior-wall sign for a Frankfurt, Germany
restaurant (see ST, July 2010, page 46). According to
Manfred Didier, Timber's owner, "The client wanted a
brand-new sign that looked very old." Delcam's Artcam
3-D software helped Timber Signs replicate intricate,
ancient carving methods. The sign's body is comprised
of 15-lb. Sign*Foam® HDU. Because the sword should
resemble the original and would protrude off the wall,
Timber Signs fabricated a complete replica instead of
a partial-relief sculpture, routing every piece twice. They
flipped a piece horizontally so the back replicates the
front, and the sword's arch moves in the same direction.
Stone Creek Coffee, a Milwaukee-area coffee shop and
roaster, had its cup runneth over with this chimneytop sign fabricated by Sign Effectz, also of Milwaukee
(see ST, July 2013, page 22). Sign Effectz built an aluminum substructure with a fiberglass body. To reduce
the cup's weight, fabricators built layers of expanding,
liquid urethane to augment the fiberglass layer. The
shop created machined-part templates for the cup
using Delcam's ArtCAM 3-D modeling software, and
shaped the parts on a Gerber Sabre 408 CNC router.
After smoothing out the cup's surface with sanding
longboards and orbital sanders, fabricators applied
Fibreglast's polyester gelcoat to cure the surface. Sign
Effectz produced the cup's graphic band with plottercut, russet-brown 3M vinyl.
