the heat radiation. It doesn't affect
visible colors (the reflection coat
does, slightly) but makes the
glasses quite thick and heavy. For
hot-glass blowing, where the heatsource (a furnace or glory hole) is
large and intense, the amount of
absorbed heat can be so extreme
that glass gets hot at the front. I
once burnt myself badly touching
such glass!
Another safety feature, though
not essential to neon work, is
UV absorption. Neon fires are fed

with only gas and air, and don't
emit substantial UV light. It's different when working with oxygenbased flames and borosilicate or
quartz glass. In those cases, the
UV absorption prevents eye inflammation, as would happen when
welding without a proper eyeshield. Normal didymium lenses
are too light in shade for quartzglass work, because the bright
glow flashes in your eyes. Here,
special darker types are necessary.
Today, a wide variety of lens
types and more frame styles (even
fashionable ones) can be had. I
prefer metal frames over plastic,
because plastic might get soft during
some really "hot" work.
If you wear prescription lenses,
or have an old frame you really
like and don't want to throw away,
just get lens blanks from the safetyglass supplier and, for a small fee,
have an optometrist fit the blanks
into the frames.
Wearing eye protection at work
is never a bad idea. Now that I'm
used to wearing my glassblowing
lenses for neon, scientific or furnace
work, I really feel uncomfortable
without them. Further advice and

OSHA office, or from the glassblower's associations and eyewear
manufacturers listed in the sidebar.
Make sure you have the equipment you need. No job is more
important than your long-term
health and safety. n
